Planning a trip to the Mountians? Altitude adjustment advice.
|
Higher altitudes affect most people to some degree. It's normal to get out of
breath easily - especially infants and the elderly. At a 9,000-foot elevation, oxygen
levels are about half of what they are at sea level. Many people experience mountain
sickness from low oxygen, symptoms such as nausea, headaches, dizziness, gasping for
breath, or fatigue. Try these tips from the Rocky Mountain Travel Guide.
- The first few days, limit exposure to higher elevations.
- If bothered by any of the symptoms listed, sit down and
breathe deeply for a few moments, then go to a lower altitude as quickly as possible.
- Sleep at a lower altitude.
- Limit strenuous activity.
- Eat more high carbohydrate foods.
